Christmas

Christmas Day is celebrated by millions of Christians around the world, usually on December 25th. It is also a popular holiday celebrated by non-Christians. Christmas Day is an annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Although the exact date of Jesus' birth is unknown .The date of December 25th was chosen in the 4th century. The popular customs of celebrating Christmas include gift-giving, sending holiday cards, Christmas trees and lights, caroling, a feast and church celebrations.

Some facts about Christmas.

1. Christmas supposedly marks the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25. But there is no mention of December 25 in the Bible and most historians actually believe he was born in the spring.
2. December 25 was probably chosen because it coincided with the ancient pagan festival Saturnalia, which celebrated the agricultural god Saturn with partying, gambling, and gift-giving.
Résultat de recherche d'images pour "christmas" 3. Many of the popular Christmas traditions today found their roots in Saturnalia: Branches from evergreen trees were used during winter solstice as a reminder of the green plants that would grow in spring when the sun gods grew strong.
4. These evergreen branches became the foundation of our Christmas tree. Germans are thought to be the first to bring “Christmas trees” into their homes at the holidays and decorate them with cookies and lights.
 5. The well-known reason we give presents at Christmas is to symbolize the gifts given to baby Jesus by the three wise men.
 6. Because of its roots in pagan festivals, Christmas was not immediately accepted by the religious. In fact, from 1659 to 1681, it was illegal to celebrate Christmas in Boston.
7. Santa Claus comes from St. Nicholas, a Christian bishop living in  Turkey in the fourth century  St. Nicholas had inherited a great deal of wealth and was known for giving it away to help the needy. When sainted, he became the protector of children.

Elephants by Léa Tannir

Elephants are large mammals. Two species are recognized, the African elephant and the Asian elephant.Male African elephants are the largest terrestrial animals and can reach a height of 4m and weight 7,000 kg.
Elephants' large ear flaps help to control their body temperature and their large legs can carry their great weight. These mammals are herbivores and can be found in savannas, forests, and deserts. They prefer to stay near water. The young elephants are called "calves". Elephants are an endangered species because hunters are hunting these mammals for their long tusks. Unfortunately, elephants will be extinct if this action is continued.

 Istanbul
by Nourhan SINNO.

During the Toussaint vacation, me and my family went to Istanbul, in Turkey. It's divided into two parts by the Bosphorus strait, the Asian and European Istanbul. They're connected by the Bosphorus bridge that was built in 1970 and completed in 1973.

We stayed in a hotel, that is located in famous Taksim touristic area.We visited many well-known historical sights.
On the first day, we planned to sight see the Hagia Sophia museum and the Sultan Ahmet Mosque as they are both in Sultan Ahmet area and located close to each other. The Blue Mosque, is one of the most famous and popular Islamic worship places in Istanbul city and the world, that was constructed during the rule of Sultan Ahmet, the fourteenth Sultan of the Ottoman empire in 1616.
After that, we headed to Hagia Sophia, that was previously a church during the Byzantine empire, and later as a mosque during the Ottoman empire and as a museum  nowadays.
The second day,our plan was to discover the DolmabahŞe palace, it was the mansion of the last six Ottoman Sultans and the first president of the Republic of Turkey, Kemal Mustafa Ataturk,
After a three hours breath taking tour, at Dolmabahşe palace, the next stop was at Topkapi palace, that was one of the royal residences of the Ottoman Sultans over a long period of time.
Day three, day four and the last day of my trip were the craziest and funniest days of the trip.We spent the whole day, every day jumping from one metro station to another, meeting new people from all arround the world, wondering arround the streets of Istanbul, shopping at its malls and eating delicious turkish food and delight at its restaurants.

In brief,I visited many countries and cities, but to me Istanbul was the best, the greatiest, most attractive and wonderful city at all.

History of Halloween - By Toufic Halawi

HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN
Standing on the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity, life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1.This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the New Year, the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating.

HALLOWEEN COMES TO AMERICA
Celebration of Halloween was extremely limited in colonial New England because of the rigid Protestant belief systems there. Halloween was much more common in Maryland and the southern colonies. As the beliefs and customs of different European ethnic groups as well as the American Indians meshed, a distinctly American version of Halloween began to emerge. The first celebrations included “play parties,” public events held to celebrate the harvest, where neighbors would share stories of the dead, tell each other’s fortunes, dance and sing. In the late 1800s, there was a move in America to mold Halloween into a holiday more about community and neighborly get-togethers than about ghosts, pranks and witchcraft.

TODAY’S HALLOWEEN TRADITIONS

The American Halloween tradition of “trick-or-treating” probably dates back to the early All Souls’ Day parades in England. During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food and families would give them pastries called “soul cakes” in return for their promise to pray for the family’s dead relatives.
The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time. Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry. On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits.

HALLOWEEN SUPERSTITIONS

Halloween has always been a holiday filled with mystery, magic and superstition. Today’s Halloween ghosts are often depicted as more fearsome and malevolent, and our customs and superstitions are scarier too. We avoid crossing paths with black cats, afraid that they might bring us bad luck. We try not to walk under ladders for the same reason. This superstition may have come from the ancient Egyptians, who believed that triangles were sacred. And around Halloween, especially, we try to avoid breaking mirrors, stepping on cracks in the road or spilling salt.
